Sunday, November 12, 2006 - Rutgers... College Football's George Mason???
Sorry for all you folks out there in Internet land anxiously awaiting for this blog to be updated (that means you, Larry, Curley and Mo).
I had a thought dawn on me last night when I went to sleep. It was about 3AM and suddenly it hit me. No, not that urge to go to the bathroom. It was that Rutgers University is this year's George Mason of College Football. What can I say? Some things in spots you can't explain. Anyway....
Remember, the Patriots who had an improbable run to the Final Four when they were thought to be on the 'bubble' just to make the NCAA Tournament on Selection Sunday? If you don't, then check out the link below - that should refresh you memory.

Rutgers had an incredible come-from-behind victory over Louisville on ESPN's Thursday Night Football. It was the biggest game in Rutgers football history and more than likely the most watched Rutgers game ever. Coach Greg Schiano has taken a Scarlet Knights football program that was dead, absoultely dead I tell you, when he got there and transformed them into a team that could very well run the table undefeated in the Big East. All that stands in their way and a perfect season seems to be a trip to Morgantown, West Virginia on December 2nd. Slowing down Pat White, Steve Slaton and that outstanding Mountaineers rushing attack operating out of their spread offense will be a tall task. Then again, they were able to make life miserable for Louisville quarterback Brian Brohm and that high-octane passing attack in the second half.
Schiano in many ways is Jim Larranaga. Think about it... Schiano has the 'chop wood' philosophy with his defense. Larranaga jokingly said that the CAA stood for the "Connecticut Assassin Association," following his team's grand upset of UCONN to reach the Final Four.
Also, as Larranaga told me, he was contacted by "several 'head hunters'" and elected to stay put in Fairfax with the Patriots. Schiano is going to have many bigger name schools come after him, one of which you would think is going to be Miami of Florida. But he insists that he is happy at Rutgers and wants to keep building them up to where they can one day play for the National Championship.
Don't look now, but that day may be very soon.
