Like a lot of people, I love the month of March, particularly from a sports perspective. Sure - you have the Super Bowl, Daytona 500 and NBA All-Star game in February. Even besides Valetine's Day, you have the Oscar's and Grammy's in February, too. But there is nothing in sports that compares with March Madness and the NCAA Tournament. That said...
Take a look at the first eight games from Thursday - the opening day of the NCAA's:
Boston College 84, Texas Tech 75
Maryland 82, Davidson 70
Louisville 78, Stanford 58
Washington State 70, Oral Roberts 54
Georgetown 80, Belmont 55
Butler 57, Old Dominion 46
Texas A&M 68, Penn 52
Vanderbilt 77, George Washington 44
... The most lopsided game was that Vandy/GW affair - where the headline had to read 'Commodores Clobber Colonials.' The closest game was only 9 points between the Red Raiders of Texas Tech, coached by the General - Bobby Knight - and the BC Eagles. Overall, the average margin of victory was 17.7 points per game.
Clearly - it has been a lopsided day of College Hoops thus far. Maybe that means this tournament will be 'chalk' all the way through and 2007 marks the first year ever that all four #1 seeds reach the Final Four. Or it could mean we've got a night ful of upsets and surpsies in store for us. Then again, we might have to wait until Friday -- or next year -- for Cinderellas such as 'Bucknell' and 'George Mason' to capture the nation's heart.
