#5 Tennessee vs. #4 Virginia - 12:10 PM
The Volunteers have a high octane offense for sure as they scored 121 points on Long Beach State in the first round, tying a first round tourney record set by UNLV in 1977. Virginia also had no problem with its first opponent, dispatching Albany 84-57. It'll be a matchup of the guards as J.R. Reynolds and Sean Singletary have been doing it all year long for the Cavs, combining for 51 points and 13 rebounds against the Great Danes. TN is led by Chris Lofton, who scored 25 points in the opening round and might be best known for his game-winning shot in last year's tournament that eliminated Winthrop. But what may determine the outcome is inside play and Tennessee gets the slight edge from me with freshman Duke Crews out of Hampton, VA (Bethel High School). Pick: Tennsesee by 8.
#9 Purdue vs. #1 Florida - 2:15 PM
Nobody has a front-line better than Florida's of Joakim Noah, Al Horford and Corey Brewer. Their length, size, athleticsm, etc. have dominated teams all year long and did a season ago as they ran to the Natl. Championship. That trio combined for 53 points and 33 rebounds as the Gators demolished Jackson State 112-69 after a slow first-half. However, it's those slow halves or periods in games where the Gators can get caught napping that sometimes get them in trouble. Will it against Purdue? Not unless Carl Landry has another double-double like the one he did vs. Arizona with 21 points and 13 rebounds. My gut says though that Purdue won't have 17 offensive rebounds on this game and force 17 turnovers. Pick: Florida rolls by 15, but guard play with Taurean Green and Lee Humphrey will ultimately determine how far they go.
#7 UNLV vs. #2 Wisconsin - 2:30 PM
Did the Badgers get a scare or what on Friday afternoon from 15th-seeded Texas A&M Corpus Christi? The Islanders, who haven't been playing D-1 ball for even 10 years, led by as many as 18 points before Wisconsin's offense finally got on track and exploded for 57 points -- thanks mostly to Kammron Taylor and Alando Tucker. Taylor went 0-for-6 from the field in the first half before scoring all of his 24 points over the final 20 minutes, and Tucker scored 23 with 9-of-10 shooting from the free-throw line. What does UNLV do to slow this tandem? They could play some zone defense, but their best chance of defeating Wisconsin will be shooting the three-point rock. Lon Kruger's Rebels also must shot as well from three-point land (8-30) as they did in two-point area (11-30) as they beat Ga. Tech 67-67. His son, Kevin Kruger, did go 0-for-8 from behind the arc and they'll need him to continue distributing it well (8Ast. in first round), but get his shot going to hold off the Badgers. Pick: Wisconsin by 1 in OT.
#5 Virginia Tech vs. #4 Southern Illinois - 2:40 PM
Seth Greenberg's Hokies trailed by 12 in the second half against Illinois on Friday night until they realized it was time to play. A team that has been hard to figure out all year long -- characterized by many as either really good or really bad -- Virginia Tech went on a 12-0 run the last 4:29 of the ball game to oust the Illini 54-52. Deron Washington is definitely the x-factor for them as the versatile combo forward put in 14 points on the offensive end and blocked a couple of shots defensively. While Va. Tech only had seven turnovers as a team and Jamon Gordon played a great floor game (10Pts. 7Ast. 7Stl.), Greenberg and co. probably know they can't get outrebounded by 13 again and survive. Southern Illinois is too good defensively and they'll find ways to get the ball to Randal Falker and Jamaal Tatum down the stretch to pull out a win for them. That is unless VT gets hot down the stretch, SIU continues to struggle shooting it from downtown and Matt Shaw - who was injured in the Holy Cross game - is a non-factor. Pick: Salukis of SIU by 6.
#11 Winthrop vs. #3 Oregon - 2:50 PM
After knocking on the door the last couple of years with close, heartbreaking losses to Gonzaga and Tennessee in the first round over the past two seasons, Gregg Marshall's Winthrop Eagles finally pulled through and got an NCAA Tournament victory. They led Notre Dame by 20 points before watching the Fighting Irish show some fight, re-taking the lead late in the second half. Winthrop ended the game with on a run of their own and won 74-64, using great teamwork to get everyone involved and produce 20 assists. Well-coached and experienced, this is a team that has the ability to be this year's George Mason. Torrell Martin gives them toughness and scoring, Craig Bradshaw really stepped up vs. the Irish (with 24 points) and guys like Phillip Williams, Michael Jenkins and Chris Gaynor are solid complementary parts. Winthrop has a nice inside-outside mix, while Oregon is a little more perimeter oriented with Aaron Brooks, Tajuan Porter, Bryce Taylor and Malik Hairston. Ernie Kent's Ducks want to get out and run, but they were unable to do that as Miami of Ohio gave them a battle in a 58-56 first round test. If the Ducks' shots aren't falling they're in trouble, but Winthrop will also need to show it can put them away if they're in front during the closing minutes. Pick: Oregon by 2 on a buzzer-beater from Brooks in the day's best game.
#7 Nevada vs. #2 Memphis - 4:45 PM
John Calipari's Memphis Tigers have now won 23 games in a row, and in order to make it 24, they will have to contain Nick Fazekas and a well-rounded Nevada squad that has been in the Top 10 of the national rankings this season. Nevada is no ordinary #7 seed as they have a little bit of everything; they can shoot the 3', buckle down defensively and play well at different styles. Nevada needed overtime to outlast Creighton 77-71 as Marcelus Kemp really raised his level of performance with 27 points, 12 rebounds and four dimes. Fazekas, Kyle Shiloh and Ramon Sessions also scored in double-figures. What Memphis has to do is punch the ball inside to their beast Joey Dorsey, who had nine points to go along 15 rebounds in the Tigers' 73-58 first round win over North Texas that allowed them to advance. Memphis likes to press and look for them to do so on Nevada, which committed 19 turnovers their last time out. I look for Nevada to handle the ball better though and for Fazekas to be a matchup problem for Memphis, provided he doesn't get in foul trouble. Pick: Nevada in an upset - they win it by 4 thanks to 25 from Fazekas.
#8 Kentucky vs. #1 Kansas - 5:00 PM
If there is a must-see 8/9 vs. 1 matchup, then this is the one. Kentucky and Kansas are two basketball programs with much tradition, prestige and past success with multiple National Championships to fall back on. While KU is the more talented, superior team, Tubby Smith's Wildcats are going to give them a battle much like the one Tom Izzo's outmatched Spartans gave North Carolina on Saturday night in a losing effort. Kentucky has three junior starters in Rahmel Bradley, Joe Crawford and Randolph Morris - the one big man who can give Kansas some problems. In addition, they have two juniors who are valuable in Sheray Thomas and Bobby Perry. Freshman Jodie Meeks, listed at 6-foot-5, is a superb athlete at the guard spot who I believe will be the key to this game going up against Mario Chalmers, Russell Robinson and another freshman in Sherron Collins. The key to Kansas in my opinion is making them shoot three-pointers out of a zone defense. Of course, they're a multi-dimensional, balanced team so it's not like you can shut one thing down and beat them. Plus throw in that they nailed 12 triples in their 40-point rout over Niagara and it shows they are more than capable from the outside. Most importantly, Kentucky cannot allow them to get to their game and that is getting out on the fast-break, otherwise the Jayhawks will torch the Wildcats. Pick: Bill Self's group is moving on to the Sweet 16 - they win by 9.
#5 USC vs. #4 Texas - 5:15 PM
Tim Floyd has the Trojans from Southern Cal believing they're not just a football power, but that they can get some winning going on the hardwood too. By cruising to a 77-60 victory on Friday night over Arkansas, SC got its first NCAA Tournament win since 2001. Nick Young put in 22 points and got some help from Gabe Pruitt and freshman Taj Gibson, a duo that combined for 29 points and 13 boards. What does Texas have that Arkansas doesn't? This guy named Kevin Durant, a freshman up for Natl. Player of the Years honors and may very well be the first overall pick taken in the upcoming NBA Draft. Durant had a very nice NCAA Tournament debut, helping the Longhorns overcome a deficit against a very improved New Mexico State squad by scoring 27 points and going 15-of-16 from the charity stripe. Speaking of foul shots, SC does pretty well there, too. The Trojans shot 23-of-25 from the line in addition to shooting 50% from the field against Arkansas. Ultimately, my feeling is the battle between D.J. Augustine of Texas and Daniel Hackett determines the outcome. Whichever player gives his team a bigger boost will prevail. Pick: Texas by 7, but an upset wouldn't surprise me.
