Friday, March 28, 2008 - More Sweet 16 NCAA Tournament Picks

Following a 4-0 night in predictions on Thursday night, we'll try to do it again on Friday as we head towards the weekend with the Elite Eight.

#3 Wisconsin v. #10 Davidson - 7:10PM - Many more people expected Wisconsin to make it this far than Davidson.  The Wildcats overcame deficits against both Gonzaga and Georgetown in the first two rounds to reach the Sweet 16.  Coach Bob McKillop's team relies heavily on the scoring/shooting of sophomore guard Stephen Curry, who's quickly becoming more popular than farther Dell, a former NBA player and standout at Virginia Tech.  Curry so far in the tournament has been remarkable, scoring 70 points through two games and scoring 55 of them in second half action, which may be the most impressive thing of all.  When playing against Wisconsin, it's important to dictate pace and with a lead it's easier to get that done.  With that in mind, Curry may need a stronger first half instead of needing heroics down the stretch versus a very solid defensive team that will use the shot clock to their advantage.  Coach Bo Ryan (.774 career winning percentage) has the Badgers thinking Final Four and that may be able to do get there as long as big man Brian Butch continues to knock down shots and rebounds, and guards Tevon Hughes and Michael Flowers hit from beyond the arc.  Hughes and Flowers were a combined 7-for-7 from three-point land in the 72-55 rout of Kansas State in the second round.  Pick:  Davidson by 3 in OT

#2 Texas v. #3 Stanford - 7:27PM - How will Texas deal with Stanford's twin tower inside combo of the Lopez brothers, Robin and Brook?  Conversely, can the Cardinal slow down the Longhorns' terrific backcourt tandem of D.J. Augustin and A.J. Abrams?  Brook Lopez carried Stanford on his back in their second round NCAA Tournament rally against Marquette, where Head Coach Trent Johnson was ejected in the first half.   Lopez notched 28 of his 30 points in the second half and Stanford won 82-81 in overtime.  Abrams has been red hot in the tournament with 52 points and 36 of them on three-point makes.  Damion James for Texas is the x-factor in this game in my opinion, while Stanford hopes to get a similar performance from guard Mitch Johnson that they got in the Marquette game where he had nine points, 16 assists and only one turnover.  Pick:  Stanford by 5

#1 Kansas v. #12 Villanova - 9:40PM - Coach Bill Self of Kansas doesn't want his Jayhawks to self-destruct (love the pun?) in this Sweet 16 matchup and become the first #1 seed to ever lose to a #12 seed.  In order for them to continue their march to the Final Four, they must do what they've been doing all season, which is beat teams with solid defense, balanced scoring and transition offense.  In the paint they are good, too, as they outscored UNLV 38-10 in that category in the second round.  Leading the way for Jay Wright's Wildcats of Villanova is sophomore point guard Scottie Reynolds, who's fearless and has the presence of mind to know when to shoot or dish in crunch time.  While he's proven to be fully capable of stepping up in the clutch, the supporting cast will need to do their part as well.  Rebounding is probably going to be a key factor in this game for Villanova; they need guys like Dante Cunningham, Shane Clark and Antonio Pena to hold their own underneath.  Pick:  Kansas by 6

#1 Memphis v. #5 Michigan State - 9:57PM - Will free-throws eventually cost the Tigers in a big spot?  That's the big question everyone is asking.  It hasn't yet, and Head Coach John Calipari seems to be confident that his squad will knock them down when they count most.  Since 1985 though, only the 2004 Connecticut team has won a National Championship while shooting under 65% from the charity stripe.  As a team, Memphis shoots 59.7% from the foul line, but as Calipari pointed out, it hasn't hurt them immensely in the past as they were able to make it to the Elite Eight in each of the past two years.  The matchup to watch in this one will be at the point guard spot, where Memphis features freshman sensation Derrick Rose, an exciting player with quick hands.  Memphis St. turns to Drew Neitzel, a savvy senior, to direct their attack.  Look for the Tigers to put Antonio Anderson on Neitzel, and maybe a couple others, in hopes of containing him.  If Neitzel has a quiet game, it'll probably be hard for Tom Izzo's Spartans to pull the upset.  Pick:  Memphis by 9
