2007 Eastern Region High School Football Top Ten:
BY MATTHEW HATFIELD
Wednesday, October 31, 2007
1. Oscar Smith (9-0) - Rich Morgan's Tigers have won every game
that they've played by a minimum of 21 points. In addition, Oscar
Smith is the only team in the region not to give up 2+TD's in a game.
2. Phoebus (9-0) - It's been three shutouts in the last three weeks for
the Phantoms. During that span, tailback Shawne Alston, who
transferred to Phoebus from Menchville, has 414 yards and 6TD's.
3. Salem (9-0) - With the Beach District Championship on the line,
Kevin Whaley didn't disappoint as he ran 31 times for 232 yards and a
touchdown to extend Salem's regular season win streak to 23 games.
4. Lake Taylor (9-0) - Hank Sawyer's Titans have outscored foes
132-27 in the third and fourth quarter this season. Senior Lenny
Paiva has accounted for 19 Lake Taylor touchdowns.
5. Bethel (8-1) - In his first season as the Head Coach at Bethel, Jeff
Nelson is getting the results fans of the Bruins dreamed of; they
became the second team to shutout Hampton in three weeks.
6. Western Branch (8-1) - Despite having the lowest ranked pass
defense in the ER, the Bruins are playing at a high level going into
their finale vs. Indian River. Nobody has 100+ rush yards on them.
7. Hampton (7-2) - It's not often that the Crabbers get blanked twice
in a three week span. They must re-group and beat Warwick in order
to hold onto the #4 seed in the Division 5 playoffs.
8. Green Run (8-1) - Shawn Wilson is hoping the Stallions, who were
averaging over 39 points per game heading into the Salem game,
don't have a letdown at Kellam this Friday.
9. Ocean Lakes (7-2) - Receiver Randall Dunn was a huge factor in
the Dolphins' 41-16 rout of First Colonial as he racked up 182 yards
and 3TD's in the first half. Up next is an improving Landstown team.
10. Great Bridge (7-2) - It was 18 years ago that Great Bridge
finished 8-3 and lost to Hampton in the playoffs. Oddly enough the
Wildcats could be facing the Crabbers, hoping for a different outcome.
Honorable Mention: Bayside, Heritage & Indian River (all 6-3)
