A LIVING LEGEND BIDS FAREWELL - KARL MALONE
BY MATTHEW HATFIELD
Written Friday, February 18th, 2005
Karl Malone scored 36,928 points in the NBA - second only to Kareem
Abdul-Jabbar all-time. He won two Olympic gold medals and made three
NBA Finals appearances. Karl had an opportunity to join the San Antonio
Spurs, who coming into Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005 had the best record in
the league. However, the news broke on Friday that the Mailman was to
retire from the game of basketball.
It wasn’t about the individual records for him. Yes, winning an NBA
Championship would’ve been great and he won’t tell you anything
different. In fact, Malone’s desire to win one may have been greater
than anybody’s in today’s NBA. But that was a team goal that he just
simply could not achieve by himself or alongside his running mate John
Stockton for 18 years in Utah. That’s what Karl was… a team guy,
nothing else. Malone gave his all each and every night, and developed
into an awesome human being on and off the court.
Sure, there are plenty of Karl Malone haters out there that said he played
the game dirty. Although, it’s those same people that wish they could’ve
done half of what he did on/off the hardwood.
Never gave up and never quit, he’ll always be remembered for that in my
opinion. A two-time MVP who missed less than a game per year his first
18 seasons in the league, Malone closes the door on what was one of the
golden eras in the history of the NBA. You could tell by hearing Karl talk
about the death of his mom that it really put life into perspective for him.
Mark Jackson, a former teammate of Malone’s and guest on ESPNEWS
recently, and Bill Walton summed it up best in my mind concerning the
Mailman.
"That’s hogwash," said Walton. "Karl Malone IS A Champion Player."
Basketball will never be the same for me without the Mailman and
Stockton running the pick and rolls. As a human being I was privileged
to watch Karl operate on the basketball floor every night and conduct
himself in such a classy way. Karl, congrats on a historic career!
