MY High School Football Record:  155-44 (78%) - 1-1 LW
Hampton Roads High School Football Rankings:
Group AAA Eastern Region:  Top 10 (Compiled On 11/16/04)

1. Hampton Crabbers (10-0) - Get a present to open the playoff this year as
Booker T. Washington (5-5) comes to Darling Stadium to play the awesome
trio of Tyrod Taylor, Trayce McPherson and Todd Nolen.

2. Phoebus Phantoms (8-2) - Elan Lewis' numbers are amazing.  What
would be the ideal icing on the cake scenario for him is if Phoebus was to
beat Woodside and then Lewis go for over 150 on the Crabbers.

3. Oscar Smith Tigers (10-0) - How effective will Greg Boone be and can
Dexter Merritt, a sophomore, step up to the playoff level atmosphere if Boone
is not himself?

4. Landstown Eagles (10-0) - Let me tell you why the Eagles have a slight
edge over Deep Creek:  Landstown had the week off to watch a playoff
caliber game between Deep Creek and Western Branch.  Eagles by seven.

5. Deep Creek Hornets (9-1) - Probably the best Deep Creek team since
2000.  Can't get in a shoot-out with Landstown or it could be an uphill climb

6. Western Branch Bruins (8-2) - Did this super defensive team miss the
playoffs?  Not really - they just got eliminated by Deep Creek last Friday.

7. Woodside Wolverines (8-2) - It's real simple - hold the Phantoms under
30 and keep Elan Lewis somewhat in check.  Okay, not so simple after all.

8. Granby Comets (7-3) - Was the 20+ point loss to Maury just an aberration
or a sign of things to come?

9. Hickory Hawks (7-3) - Return the Brown brothers, QB Brian Inghram and
kicker Ryan Estep among others.  Possible SE District favorite in 2005?

10. Kempsville Chiefs (8-2) - Future is very bright for Kempsville, too.  Beach
District rushing Champ Kevin Simmons will be back the next two years.

onorable Mention:  Kellam, Bethel and Tallwood

Q. What team or teams have been the most disappointing in September
which ones have surprised you so far?

A. Well, from a  record standpoint you've got to look at Booker T. (1-3), Cox
(2-2), Lake Taylor (2-2) and Great Bridge (0-3) as the early disappointments.  I
know Booker T. has had a tough schedule with Warwick, Oscar Smith and
Wilson, but they should have been able to win one of those (Wilson) and beat
Norview by more than 12.  I expect them to play better in the second half of the
season.  Cox is on the list because of their poor second half display vs.
Landstown and that loss to Tallwood.  Great Bridge wasn't expected to do
well, though being outscored 129-10 isn't positive output.  Lake Taylor made
the playoffs last year and had a chance to take advantage of a weak Eastern
District with the exception of Granby.

As far as surprised teams go Kempsville has to be the at the top of the list
entering October.  Just like two years ago many thought the Chiefs were not a
playoff contender in the preseason.  At 3-0 they can go at it with Landstown for
all the marbles in the Beach District provided they win at Cox.  I'm not
surprised Norview is 2-2 because they started with Kings Fork and
Gloucester, but I have been impressed with the effort put forth by the Pilots.

Q. Kempsville has Tallwood Friday at Tallwood. Its Tallwood's homecoming
in which they will be pumped up coming off a great win against Princess
Anne. If Jason Fuller can't play expect Tallwood to exploit that and run right at
his replacement. This will be a great close game, I expect this to be a
possible game of the week. Both of these teams have great running games,
but it will come down to who has the best quarterback and passing weapons
to prevail in this great game.  Thoughts on the game?

I agree - it should be very tight and may be decided in the fourth quarter. If
Fuller is unable to play I would give Tallwood an excellent chance of winning.
Salem tried to run it at Fuller's replacement last Friday night with freshman
tailback Kevin Whaley, who ran for 99 yards on the night. I could see Brian
Royster and company having a big night running and Tallwood has three
really good linebackers on defense. Kevin Simmons is a superb running
back also.

If it does come down to the passing game I give Kempsville a slight edge.
They've been throwing the ball more than in past years. Still, the passing
attack is in the early stages of development. They've got a real talented junior
receiver in Terrell Whitehead (who has intercepted four passes this year at
defensive back) and a couple other capable pass catchers.

As far as game of the night - maybe in the Beach District. But absolutely NOT
with matchups like Hickory-Western Branch, Hampton-Phoebus and Deep
Creek-Oscar Smith.

Congratulations to Chris Beatty's Landstown Eagles on
becoming the first ever Virginia Beach city school to win the
AAA Division 6 State Football Championship outright.
Princess Anne was the last Va. Beach to win a share of it back
in 1967 along with Douglas Freeman of Richmond and
Annandale.

The Eagles, behind great play all year from Deveon Simmons,
Devone Wiggins, Markus Black, Percy Harvin, Damon
McDainel and others, defeated Robinson this past Saturday
(Dec. 11th).
Landstown Head Coach Chris Beatty has
come over from Salem and North Stafford
and taken a school in its fourth year of
existence to the top of the Virginia High
School football world in Division 6.

Region High School Basketball exclusively on VirginiaPreps.com***

Q.  What teams impressed you the most at Battle of the Bay?  Give me your
analysis on the event  Thanks - Jack.

A.  Interesting question, Jack.  In my opinion, the Eastern Region is not as
'stocked' with talent in basketball as it is in football.  That's a big reason why ER
schools Oscar Smith, Norcom and Woodside fell to Norfolk Collegiate,
Herndon and national powerhouse Oak Hill Academy.  I tell you the two private
schools that won early in  he day - Oak Tree Academy and Norfolk Collegiate -
impressed me. Oak Hill didn't really impress me because I expected them to
do very well since they obviously are one of the ten best teams in America.
What Jim Markey has over at Norfolk Collegiate is really, really good.  Karolis
Petrukonis has potnetial very close to limitless status.  Jack Royal, a junior,
shot the ball well as did sophomore John Treherne.  They will be even better
next season ,and you can bank on that.

Scotty Reynolds of Herndon was in my opinion the best player there.  Of the
Eastern Region teams I'd have to say that Woodside was the most enjoyable to
watch because of their ability to light it up, and I mean light it up, from long
distance.  Thats what separates them from I.C. Norcom.

Q.  Hey do you know where Calvin Baker of Woodside is going?  And how did
he do against Oak Hill?

A.  I'm assuming you mean for college.  That would be William & Mary. Baker
shot 7-17 from the field (3-9 3's) and scored 17 points for the Woodside
Wolverines, who suffered just their second loss of the season at Battle of the
Bay.  In addition, Baker, who in my opinion has been the most consistent guard
in the Eastern Region hands down, grabbed six rebounds, dished out three
assists and had four steals.
